Our Story
It was 1988 when I ventured to Glenwood Springs Colorado for a ten day family vacation at Rock Gardens Campground. I went rafting, fishing, hiking, soaked in the Glenwood Hot Springs pool, went to Aspen then Vail and enjoyed everything that this business and community was all about. I fell in love with the location of Rock Gardens Campground, The Roaring Fork Valley and the Rocky Mountains, but all good things come to an end and it was time to head back to California.
By the time I reached Grand Junction I started talking about giving up my good paying corporate job, and entertained the possibility of buying Rock Gardens Campground and moving to No Name Colorado. By the time I hit Las Vegas the decision was made and when I reached home in Orange County California I called the campground owners and told them of my plans. Only to hear “you have been out in the sun too long, get some rest, take two aspirin and it will go away”. The following week I informed my boss of my plans and the reaction was “you have been out in the sun too long, get some rest, take two aspirin and it will go away.”
Well on March 15, 1990 I became the owner of Rock Gardens Campground & MHP and Rock Gardens Rafting, Inc. Most people would say why pay that kind of money for a campground and mobile home park, but I saw the future. I had purchased a piece of property that is located in one of the most beautiful canyons in the state of Colorado, with the Colorado River flowing through it, located in a town known for its history and visitor attractions, next to Interstate 70 and the award winning Glenwood Canyon Recreation Trail, situated between Vail and Aspen Colorado (two world class resort destinations), but most of all this was a place to chase dreams and build a very special place.
My vision was to take this small campground and mobile home park and turn it into a First Class Resort that would include Resort Cabins, smaller camper cabins, “Big Rig” RV sites, river side camp sites, a new bathhouse with a laundry facility and a multi-purpose building with a bar & grill to service the customers that enjoy our property and the beautiful Glenwood Canyon that we now can call our office. In 2000, my wife Kathy and I began to seriously work on designing the resort and on July 12, 2004 the Board of County Commissioners for Garfield County made my vision a reality by approving our PUD.
Over the years we have developed the property and now the final piece has been added and the puzzle complete. Our Resort Cabins are wonderful, the camper cabins though more rustic provide shelter and a bed, the RV sites fit any size motor home and the camp sites along the river are superb. The final piece is the Canyon Club with two adjoining suites that can be opened up for large families or groups, a 2000 square foot gathering or meeting room and a 5000 square foot deck that houses the No Name Bar & Grill.
Come visit us at Glenwood Canyon Resort relax and enjoy all of the activities available including Glenwood Canyon Zipline, White Water Rafting, the Glenwood Hot Springs Pool and more. Who knows what dreams will come from your experience, but we know you will have memories to last a life time.
